Celestial Ascendance is a short story by Joshua C. Perian that was published as introductory fiction for Operational Turning Points: Capellan Crusades.
Plot Summary[edit]
The story follows Sao-shao Marcus Chen, a dedicated officer of the Capellan Confederation, aboard the DropShip Xi'an during an assault on Republic of the Sphere forces on Liao on 8 March 3113. Chen reflects on his lifelong service to the Confederation, tracing his path from childhood through military training, combat during the Victoria War, and eventual induction into the elite Red Lancers, personal bodyguards to Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao. Now stationed aboard the Xi'an, Chen oversees a covert operation involving Sun-Tzu Liao, who pilots a golden Emperor and launches alone from the DropShip toward the battlefield below.
As Sun-Tzu descends toward Chang-an, Chen initiates the DropShip's automated systems to ascend into orbit. He receives a prearranged broadcast from Sun-Tzu Liao declaring the planet belongs to the Capellan people. Chen then transmits recorded data of the operation to a courier JumpShip waiting at a local pirate jump point, destined for Sian, the Capellan capital.
The story concludes with Chen alone on the bridge of the Xi'an, completing the transmission and reflecting silently as the DropShip leaves the planets orbit.
